"The Clapham Grand" London Nightlife Tip by sjvessey

People come from all over town to go to this nightclub, located inside an old converted theatre. The stalls area is now the main dance floor, but the upper circle remains complete with seats, providing plenty of space for chilling or just people watching on the floor below. The stage is still there too - and after midnight hosts Dr Glitz and the Fabulous Flirtations, a tongue-in-cheek 70s disco act that's a well-known feature of the Grand. Dr Glitz wears a shiny silver suit, cheesey sunglasses and an Afro wig. The six dancing girls do their thing while he sings along to the Village People.

There are three bar areas - two downstairs and one behind the upper circle, but even so it gets pretty crowded - don't go here wearing warm winter clothes unless you leave them in the cloakroom.

Entrance fee about 10. Make sure you get there before about 10.30pm or you'll have to queue outside for a long time, and you may not get in at all. Open until 2am.

Dress Code: You can get away with pretty much everything except sneakers. In fact that's pretty much true of any nightclub in London. Wear whatever top and pants you like, the doormen don't care. But they always look at your shoes!

Directions: Clapham, opposite Clapham Junction railway station. It's easy enough to get to, but be warned - licenced taxis are scare come closing time.
Theme: Nightclub
