  Leicester Square

Leicester Square amazes me. It's always packed full of people (i.e. tourists) yet I never think there's anything really to do here... amazing! At Christmas time, a rather tacky fair comes to town, which just makes it all the more crowded, unfortunately.

Go to the square if you must. If you're looking for cinemas this is definitely your place - there's the Odeon Leicester Square, Odeon Mezzanine, Warner Village, and the Empire.

But for bars and clubs and stuff, it's pretty bare. My advice is to head north across Shaftesbury Avenue into the depths of Soho. Old Compton Street, Dean Street, Frith Street and Greek Street are your best bets. Alternatively head east towards Covent Garden, or slightly west to Tiger Tiger on Haymarket, or the Atlantic Bar near Piccadilly Circus.

Many of the Soho bars are now open until 2-3am, although you may have to pay a nominal cover charge after 11pm, probably 5. Beware going in groups of guys... you may be turned away at the door. Most of these places require you to have at least one female in your party (invariably referred to by the doormen as a 'lady'). Don't ask me why, that's just the way it is.

Dress Code: Anything. I saw a guy with a punk hairstyle and mascara wearing bright red motorbike leathers once. Although that was in a gay bar.

Directions: Soho
Theme: People Watching
