This famous Memorial depicts the US Marines (and one Navy Corpsman) raising the American flag over Mt Suribachi on the Island battleground of Iwo Jima. Though the monument began as a USMC WWII monument, it now symbolized Marine sacrifices from all wars. The campaigns where Marines have fought are engraved around the upper edge of the monument's base.
Next to the monument is Arlington National Cemetery which can be reached via a pedestrian gate. There is also an ugly bell tower here called the Netherlands Carillon, that is surrounded by tulips and plays nice music.
I have been to this park when it was almost deserted in the fall, and I have also been here on a Friday in he summer when the Marine Corp Band was preparing to play, and it was packed.
The closest metro stop to the Marine Corps Monument is Rosslyn Station, about 10-15 minutes away on foot.
