Most everyone is familiar with the Grand Portico of this church being the venue for street performers since at least 1662, according to writings by Samuel Pepys. It was designed by Inigo Jones to be the entrance of the church looking over the piazza that he envisioned. The clergy complained, however, since the altar of churches is traditionally at the East end. The design had to be re-done and the portico is basically a fake door but wound up being used as a stage by local performers.
