Slovaks--at least the Slovaks I'd met--were well connected with their cultural history. They had traditional National Slovak songs, and more interesting to me, they had traditional local songs from their own villages. They even had wardrobes of traditional garb to be worn during special festivities.This gave me a sense of reaching past and beyond political changes to the essence of the people from which I came.

In fact this perpetual holding on to their traditions was their way of not being too effected by all the changes that were forced on them. No matter what the dominant authority happened to be at any given time, they always knew who they were.

This is something that seems to be falling to the wayside in many countries and I hope the people of Slovakia continue respecting their past culture in the future.
