The Watergate Hotel and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts are located side by side along the Potomac River in Foggy Bottom.

The Watergate is actually a large complex consisting of numerous buildings with offices, apartments, a hotel, and retail. The complex was built in the 1960s by an Italian company, and they were part of an interesting side note in American history. The Democratic National Committee had its headquarters on the sixth floor of the 2600 Virginia Avenue structure in 1972. President Nixon decided to wiretap the rooms to gain an edge in the upcoming elections, and these men were caught and arrested in June 1972. This led to several large investigations, and evidence of numerous other crimes authorized by Nixon while in office. He resigned from the presidency in 1974 but was pardoned of all crimes by the new President Gerald Ford.

Across the street from the Watergate complex was a Howard Johnson's hotel at 2601 Virginia Avenue NW. From this building, Nixon's men monitored the wiretaps in the Watergate building directly across the street. This building now belongs to George Washington University and is used as dormitories. In fact, VT member Lhenne1 lived here when she attended school at GW.
