This was the first place I stayed in Bangkok. It's very clean with a relaxed atmosphere. I met some truly amazing people there from all over the world, German, English, South African, Australian, American, etc. in a city that never sleeps!
There are 5 floors, the top two floors have rooms with bunk beds and bathrooms. The bathrooms and bedrooms are cleaned daily. Clean sheets when you arrive. There is no hot water, but I didn't find that to be a big deal because the bathroom is so clean. Also you need to get use to the fact that you should supply yourself with your own toilet paper. They only have the spray nozzles to spray yourself after you use the restroom. There is also a laundry facility there where they will do your laundry for cheap. The 3rd floor is where the reception is and is also the common area. There is a pool table, couches, tables for sitting. You may smoke inside by the open windows. They have a variety of movies to watch on a flat screen tv. They also sell alcohol there if you feel like chillin out and just relaxing. There is a ton of information about Thailand posted on the walls of the common area. There are English speaking attendants running the front desk, so the language barrier isn't really a problem. My friends and I actually went out with Penny one of the receptionists, she showed us a great time. She went back to the UK so you wont be finding her there unless she comes back in the future. The second floor has computers with internet access for 1 baht per minute and each guest recieves 20 free minutes after 10pm. There are two bathrooms on that floor with a sink in between. The first floor is where you enter and looks sort of like a cafe that isn't in operation.
Unique Qualities: All in all I had a good experience at Soi 1 but the people I met really made it fun. It is centrally located in Bangkok close to the red light districts, shopping malls, street markets and bars. 711 is right next door. There are food vendors all over the area. There is a cute little fish pond right outside. Down the street there is the Car Bar (A VW van pulls up at night and opens the windows and pulls out some stools and starts the party) don't forget to grab a drink there, it's quite the unique experience.
