Taking the ferry on the BVI is a great way to spend your time for various reasons:
Firstly it's a great way to go to many islands of course. Ferries are reliable, not too expensive and really fast. You will get the chance to see many scenic views when you - unlike the locals - sit on deck during your journey. On the morning ferries you will be among the locals which was great fun.
Secondly at the ferrydocks you will experience island life. The ferries to the smaller islands don't only transport people, they also serve as supply boats. Before you can get on or off the boat hundreds of boxes with frozen fish, beer cans, diapers or bananas will be loaded. After having seen the logistics involved in the island life, we appreciated the affordable restaurant prices even more.
Ferries leave from West End or Road Town on Tortola, from Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda, from Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke. Most ferries are more or less on time and you buy your tickets before boarding. Return fares are cheaper than two one way trips.
