The Casa del Fauno (in English, House of the Faun) is one of the biggest residences of the town of Pompeii and it is one of the most luxurious aristocratic houses from the Roman republic in Italy. It was built in the second century BC, during the Samnite period (200 - 80 BC). It covers nearly 3,000 square meters, and occupies an entire city block, or insula (80*35 meters).
The House of the Faun was named for the bronze statue of the dancing faun located, originally, on the lip of the impluvium. The one you can see nowadays is a copy of the original located in the National Museum of Naples.
At the entrance of the house you can see a mosaic with the Latin regard HAVE (in English, Hello); in the vestibule you can see on the walls frescos imitating the marmoreal covering, while above you can see two small temples. The tuscan atrium was covered by wonderful frescos, nowadays in the National Museum of Naples.
