The Thor Jensen house is one of the most beautiful and splendid wooden houses in ReykjavÝk. It was built in 1907-1908 by the Danish entrepreneur Thor Jensen in the architectural style of an Italian villa. There are 15 rooms in the house, the ground floor is 268 m2 and the first floor is 242 m2 which made this house a palace in ReykjavÝk given the poverty of the Icelandic nation in that century.

It has been estimated that if a house like this were to be built today (2015) that the market value of it would be ISK 700.000.000.

Thor Jensen was a young Danish man who came to Iceland to become an apprentice in a store in Iceland. This young man later became one of the greatest entrepreneurs in Iceland. He had 11 children and they lived in this house until 1937. ReykjavÝk bought this house in 1963 and a couple of years ago one of Thor Jensen's great-grandchildren, the entrepreneur Bj÷rgˇlfur Thor Bj÷rgˇlfsson, bought this house.

The garden around the house is open to public and is called Hallargarur park (The Palace park). It is a beautiful park and is one of the festivity areas on our national day on the 17th of June.

This beautiful house is preserved.

We always refer to this house as FrÝkirkjuvegur 11, by the name and number of the street.

The house is being renovated and there are plans of opening it up to the public and creating a museum in it.

Address: FrÝkirkjuvegur 11, 101 ReykjavÝk
Directions: The Thor Jensen house is by Hallargarurinn park and opposite Tj÷rnin pond. From LŠkjartorg walk straight ahead south LŠkjargata until it turns into FrÝkirkjuvegur, pass FrÝkirkjan church and The National gallery of Iceland, there is this beautiful house.
