The most southeastern point of Grande-Terre is called La Pointe des Châteaux (the point of the castles) and is a spectacular place to visit. From Saint-François it?s a drive of 11 kilometres over an empty, straight road heading to the viewpoint.
When you arrive at the viewpoint you have two options: staying at the beach that is 20 metres away and enjoy the view from there, or walking to another viewpoint that takes a walk of about 30 minutes. Me I tried to do the walk to the higher viewpoint, but the path leading there was very bad, very narrow and very wet when I was there so I only did the first ten minutes.
The peninsula that forms the Pointe des Châteaux leads far into the sea and with a lot of fantasy the rocks have the shape of castles. That?s where it gets its name from. This rockformation is a spectacular place to watch the sunrise at, like I did. I was a bit unfortunate that there were too many clouds to watch it decently, but nevertheless it was still pretty.
At a few kilometres from the Pointe you?ll see the small island of La Désirade, and it?s said that when you make it to the highest viewpoint, you can also see the islands of Marie-Galante, Basse-Terre and Les Saintes when the sky is clear, but I didn?t make it that far.
Address: Pointe des Châteaux, Saint-François
Directions: About 15 kilometres east from Saint-François
