One of Geneva's prized monuments and a symbol of the city is the Jet d'Eau. The fountain is Europe's highest and is located in the middle of lac de Genève (lake Geneva). The current fountain, which shoots up to 90 metres if the winds are calm, dates from 1951. But it replaced a previous unintended fountain that functioned as a safety valve for a hydroelectric power plant since 1885. Many cities around the world have copied Geneva's fountain in modern times, including Cairo and Jeddah.
