Ways to save on transportation are to check with the hotel or inn that you are staying at and see if they have a day discount where you pay one set price for unlimited travel on the bus. This can save you money as not only is using the subway or train expensive but the bus going from point A-B can be expensive too. Taxi cabs are definatley expensive here. Sometimes when you book your hotel or inn they price of bus fair in that particular area is already included. If you email them or call them up and see if they have any type of bus pass that you can purchase. For one day it cost us $10 in Kyoto and came in handy. Please note that the bus rides can be extremly long depending on how far across town you are traveling as they have many stops. It can also get quite crowded too. Many people have to stand up the whole ride. Your best phrase to know riding the bus is sumi masen which means excuse me it helped me out many times.
