Antoni Gaudi, Barcelona: 23 reviews and 29 photos

Favorite thing: The city is famed for its Modernist architecture, almost all of which are innovative masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi, who seemingly used the city as his canvas. Many are extraordinarily crafted; their shapes mimicking nature and hues spanning across a spectrum. The outstanding being the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, an exquisite cathedral to which the artist dedicated the last 43 years of his life, but which remains as yet unfinished. The completed art piece will feature 12 bell-towers in the facades dedicated to the 12 apostles, 4 others for the evangelists, a central dome in honor of Jesus Christ and a tower of Virgin Mary. I suggest heading up to the spires, accessible via spiral and shadowy stairways, to have an idea of what the final structure should look like and to simultaneously capture an overview of Barcelona.

His excellent draughtsmanship is also displayed around Passeig de Gracia, the so-called Quadrat d’Or (Golden Square) in the Eixample. Of all, the wave-like Casa Mila is the most outstanding, mainly because of its colorful mosaic outlook and inexplicable balconies. Another area that details his works is Parc Guell, a lovely park which sits on a hill, accessible via steep flights of steps from the Lesseps subway station. By foot, you can ascend to a large pavilion supported by near hundred columns. But it will take quite some time to get to that point. It was surely worth the while to make that journey which comes packaged with superb view of the city and yet more exotic but interesting structures designed by Mr. Gaudi. Amid his artistic works stands the pinkish Casa-Museu Gaudi, a museum dedicated to him which once was his residence.
