the gato cigar factory was founded by eduardo gato and was one of the largest cigar factories in key west. by 1890 there were over 130 cuban cigar factories in key west with an annual output of 100 million cigars. the southern most guesthouse on the south end of duval street was once eduardo gato's home. today this building is owned by monroe county and is used for offices. for those interested in cuban history and culture in key west this historic building is worth a look.
