"Sahuaro Ranch, Historic Landmark in Glendale" Glendale Things to Do Tip by jumpingnorman
Glendale Things to Do: 15 reviews and 29 photos
This Sunday afternoon (November 2008), I took my 4 year old twins with me to return some overdue cartoon DVD's at the Glendale Public Library here in Arizona. Heading home, I saw a sign saying "Sahuaro Ranch" as I was at the stoplight at the corner of the library --- Hmmm...I thought a little bit, and decided maybe the kids would enjoy a walk since the afternoon looked nice, a little windy and cool (a special treat after the hot summers)...
The entrance was a lone road and to the right were tall palm trees with a huge steel gate (with roosters around it) leading to an old ranch mansion --- it was open! So, I parked along with other cars and walked out with the kids onto the nice lawn towards this "Falcon Crest-like" abode...
Citrus trees were at one side and these were apparently started by the husband (Richard) of then-owner Charlotte Smith in 1927. There were lots of picnic tables available for the public at a first-come first-serve basis, and you could see a lot of families going on photoshoots at the picturesque ranch. We decided to take pictures on the mansion porches, the old ranch equipment and the corn field.
Truly a nice place to walk around in, with roosters and peacocks. The kids had a blast running around - up and down stairs at the side of the house ranches. There were also nearby soccer, volleyball, softball and football fields - and a playground which features the EVOS, a unique suspended playground for ages 5 and older.
This was definitely a nice discovery a short drive from our house! Unfortunately, the mansion/ranchhouses were closed so we will have to come back during business hours of the week...
