Favorite thing: As we were touring Fatehpur Sikri with our terrific guide Rajiv, he told us story after story of palace politics, romance and intrigue during the times of Akbar the Great and his following generations. It was all quite mesmerizing, and my wife Bonnie particularly found the whole Mughal royal scene to be fascinating.

Rajiv said that if she really wanted to get a "feel" for palace life and the royal way of "back then", he had a reading suggestion. He recommended two works of historical fiction by an Indian author named Indu Sunderesan. One is titled THE TWENTIETH WIFE, and the sequel is called THE FEAST OF ROSES. They are fiction, but are based on historical characters in the courts of Akbar and his subsequent successors. The main character is a princess named Mehrunnisa, who was later called "Nur Jahan", or the "light of Jahan". Mehrunnisa was the sister in law of Arjumand Banu Begam, otherwise known of as Mumtaz Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal was the favorite wife of Shah Jahan, and when she died, he - in his intense gried - planned and built the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan, the Moghul Emperor, was the grandson of Akbar the Great.

Bonnie is about half-way through THE TWENTIETH WIFE and says that it's quite entertaining. So, if you'd like to have something to read on your flight to India that might just give you a better "feel" for life at Fatehpur Sikri and in the royal courts, I'd suggest checking on Amazon and getting yourself of copy of these titles.
