"Karnak" Egypt Things to Do Tip by rcsparty

Egypt Things to Do: 1,687 reviews and 2,532 photos

The Temple of Karnak is a complex of multiple temples. A 20m high, mud brick enclosure wall surrounded all these buildings. The entrance is guarded by a row of sphinxes, with 20 on each side. Walking through the temple, is a journey through a number of dynasties, starting with the first Pylon, built during the time of King Nektanebo I, of the 30th dynasty. We were part of a tour group, which I stayed with for about 20 minutes, and then found it much more interesting to wander off on my own. If you are interested in hearing more, there is always some tour group explaining a particular part of the temple.

I found it particularily interesting to hear how they raised the obelisks and the roof on the columns, by building mounds of sand and then emptying the sand. Be prepared to deal with huge crowds, as there are some parts of the temple that are extremely crowded. The visit to this temple was truly fascinating to me.
