Although established in 1680 by King Louis XIV, la Comédie-Française did not settle in the current theatre until 1799. Its creation was intended to unify French actors and counterbalance the then popular comédie italienne, which was later banned by the King. Soon afterwards, la Comédie-Française commanded some of the most respected theatre productions in France, including works by Molière. The current theatre in which it has resided for over two centuries was built as an opera house in 1790, shortly after the French Revolution. Although largely the same since its construction, the structure has undergone enlargements and renovations over the years, particularly after the destructive fire of 1900.
