We visited no restaurants in St Helens because we self-catered. We did visit the Salty Seas seafood restaurant and take-away though, for some fresh fish and chips. This is a seriously old-style non-commercial country takeaway, with its chalkboard menu outside and a pleasant chatty lady at the counter awaiting your order. If the weather was better than when we visited, the outside tables overlooking Medeas Cove, a backwater of Georges Bay, would be the place to eat.
Now, ‘Salty Seas’ is probably as much a ‘must see’ as anything else. It also apparently operates as a fish market for the fishing fleet. As a result, it is able to offer totally fresh fish – how many fish’n’chips shops do you know where you can inspect large tanks of finny creatures fresh from the deep and still swimming around?
Our fish fillets were from a supply on the counter, not direct from the tank. Still, it was as fresh and appetising as it looked in the box, but sadly the chips were a little on the soggy side. Full points for trying, but the overall result was not quite as good as we’d hoped.
