Teh Batalha monestary is one of the most impressive buildings in Portugal.
It was build after a big battle between Portugal and Spain where the Portugese king promised to build a monestary in the honor of virgin Mary if the portugese could win the battle and thereby avoid being taken over by spain.

The national hero of Portugal, Henri the navigator is buried in the church next to the Batalha monestary by the way.

Directions: It´s located roughly half way between Lisbon and Porto.
