"Going to Porvoo by bus from Helsinki" Helsinki Off The Beaten Path Tip by jumpingnorman

I decided not to join any tour group and just took a bus from the station (a bus station which was under a mall in Helsinki) which brought me to Porvoo in one hour (I think it was only 10.40 Euros, year 2008). I had my own time and did not have to be rushed anywhere! It was easy and a great experience riding the bus on my own. There is also an excursion boat which you can take from Market Square.

Porvoo is the second oldest town in Finland (founded in 1346), and one of the counrty’s six medieval towns. It is famous because of the wooden houses (the Old Town or Gamla Stan in Swedish) that you see by the river canal. The river Porvoonjoki flows through the town which is situated on the southern coast of Finland, approximately 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Helsinki.
