Fort Canning Park is a large, green area, high on a hill overlooking the city. Fort Canning was established in 1859 as an Arms store, Barracks and Hospital.

In 1822, Sir Stamford Raffles had a house built and completed in 2 weeks, for himself and his sisters family. Raffles enjoyed it so much, that he suggested that he be buried here, mixed with the ashes of Malay Kings.
His home was later renamed, Government House.
The 1st Botanic Gardens also began as an experiment on the slopes of the hills.
