My husband, son and I lived in Belgium for five years (from 2003-2008). Belgium is a small country located between France and the Netherlands, boarding Luxemburg and Germany. I find that Belgium is in the heart of Europe because travelling from Belgium is very convenient. Although the weather is not always the best (a lot of rain and cold wind) the locals, culture and the food make up for it. A small airline called Ryanair located right outside of Charleroi (a small airport about 10 Minutes south of Brussels) flys almost anywhere in Europe for sometimes less than $50 (one way). We flew with Ryanair to Austria and Italy and had a great experience. I felt the safest in this airline - its basically like taking the bus. No assigned seats, no waiting, no calls. The airline flys on time - if you are late - sorry!
Okay, now to Belgium. There is a lot to do in this little country. To the north is a great Beach Resort with Bordwalks & Beaches from the Northsee. A great place to go is De Haan and Oostende. If you prefer more to got in land there is a little town called Brugge and offers great sightseeing, historical monuments and canals. Further up north is Antwerpen with the amazing diamond district (about 70% of all diamonds go through Antwerp). To the east is Gent with historical buildings and canals and of course Brussels with the famous Grand Place, Maneken ***, historical buildings, churches, the Kunst Berg and the Atomium. A little bit more to the south is Waterloo with the historical sites of Napoleons last battle and to the south is a little town called Tournai. If you happen to have children there are a number of great indoor swimming pools from Aqualibi in Brussels (Wavre) to the AquaCentre in Engien and Aqua Tournai (with paddle boats, a lake and great views). Walibi is a large Amusement park in Wavre with rollercoasters, and Parc Paradisio features creatures from every exotic corner of the globe is located in Brugelette not far away from Mons in the Wallonia Region of Belgium.
