Calypso Cafe: "Carribean food and atmosphere in Chicago" Calypso Cafe Tip by Jefie
Calypso Cafe, Chicago: 2 reviews and 6 photos
One afternoon, Kristi (VTer Dabs) took me on a really nice tour of the South Side, around the Hyde Park, World's Fair and University of Chicago areas. We went out for an early dinner at the Harper Court complex, where I got to choose between some Cajun/Creole food at Dixie Kitchen and Carribean food at Calypso Cafe. After looking at both menus (the two restaurants are located right next to each other), I decided to go for the Carribean-themed one. It seems as though they put just as much effort into the decoration as in the menu to give the place a Carribean flavour - the bright colours and salsa music make for a slightly over-the-top but fun atmosphere! I ordered a ropa vieja sandwich and also got to sample Kristi's plantain nachos, and both dishes were quite good. A nice option if you happen to be in the area!
