The clothes halls and the market stalls that you could see in any market town are no longer to be found in Sejny but there are still many 19th century houses left not only in the main street. Mostly no more than two-storey high, many have now been renovated to make the street look colourful. Mind you, some of them are wooden and only pretend to be brick, having been plastered over, others have only brick facades. And I must say I liked the wooden ones best, so wonderfully quaint! If you walk around the town you will find many old buildings, some of them with wooden ornaments. The town's nineteenth-century layout has been kept as well, all of this due to the fact that by that time Sejny had turned from the wealthy market town into a provincial one, of little importance and without any prospects. Whatever that might have meant to its development, this is what made the place so lovely and interesting for us to see.
