"The Basilica and the Museum at the Monastery" Sejny Things to Do Tip by evaanna

Founded by Jerzy Grodzinski and built in 1610-1616, the Basilica of the Visitation and the Post- Dominican Monastery with its four towers rise high above the town. Originally in the Renaissance style, in the 18th century the church acquired its baroque facade with two towers, which closes the main street of the town. Over the main entrance you can see two huge gilded keys with a bishop's tiara and the coats-of-arms of the founders.
The ground floor of the monastery, which is being restored inside, has interesting vaulting but there is not much to see there for a tourist from abroad. It now houses an exhibition showing photographs of victims of the Communist regime in Poland and their persecutors. As far as I remember, the descriptions are only in Polish so of little use to foreign tourists. There is also a small ethnographic exhibition, but a more extensive collection can be seen at the former Bishops' Palace, now the Museum of the Land of Sejny. The first floor houses a rather modest museum of the diocese. If you are short of time, just enter the Basilica and see the monastery from the outside.
There is a car park right outside the church where for a small fee - something like 2 zl - you can leave your car for the whole day. The kiosk there serves also as Tourist Information, where you can get leaflets with the town map and a list of things to see.
