The small township of Milang is located 20kms from Strathalbyn on the shores of Lake Alexandrina. The lake is large, and shallow, you have to be careful if out on it, because the wind can come up very quickly, and cause close waves, lives have been lost on this lake. Between the years of 1860 -1880, Milang was a thriving port. Cargo was unloaded onto Bullock drays, they travelled a distance of about 9ks a day heading to Adelaide. It also was a ship building centre, with quite a few Paddlesteamers being launched from here. Now, its a quiet holiday destination, with lots of shacks, a caravan park on the waters front, and a Motel. The Pier Hotel does reasonably priced meals. You can fish, dig for freshwater mussels, or swim in the lake. Theres a long Jetty here.
Take a drive around the edge of the lake by the wetlands, here you should see a variety of water birds and others. This is an ideal place for birdwatching.
On the Australia day weekend (January 26th) the Milang Freshwater Classic is held, yachts (about 400 of them) sail from Milang to Goolwa, quite a sight to see.
