"Ft Ward" Alexandria Things to Do Tip by Tom_Fields
Alexandria Things to Do: 121 reviews and 348 photos
At the outset of the Civil War, Union forces occupied Alexandria. Surrounded by Confederates and their sympathizers, Washington was very vulnerable. So the army constructed a series of forts all around the city.
Most are gone, but a few still survive. The best example in Virginia is Ft Ward. This historic fort was never attacked. But it offers a look at life in the army during the Civil War era. The Visitors Center has a collection of weapons, uniforms, and memorabilia. Tour the troops' quarters, to see how they lived.
There is also a park here with picnic grounds and a small outdoor amphitheater. Music and other events are scheduled all summer. The fort and park are operated by the city of Alexandria.
