Apologies to John Wayne there but it's always been a movie line that stuck with me.
Speyer was always an important religious centre though it vacillated at times as to how important.
Many pilgrims passed by on their pilgrimage through Germany so it was only natural that Jakob pilgrims were numbered among them.
As homage to the countless pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, the city of Speyer has placed this big bronze statue of a Jakob Pilgrim (by Martin Meyer, early 20th century) on the central Maximilianstrasse.
On closer viewing, this statue is impressive in the way it is modelled. The pilgrim has a very strong-minded look on his face, his view is directed on the road he walks, as if a real pilgrim was captured during his long and enduring walk in all kind of windy weather.
I thought the fact that he is walking away from the main cathedral was significant also, though this may not have been in the minds of those who placed the statue.

Address: Maximilianstrasse
Directions: faces Church of the Holy Spirit
