The Ohiopyle State Park is one of the biggest tourist draws in western Pennsylvania. The Park protects the deep gorge of the Youghiogheny River as it carves its way through the Laurel Highlands. The Park is a major center for would-be whitewater enthusiasts. Several companies operate different trips from the Park’s center. There is a Lower Yough trip for those wanting a taste of adventure - class III-IV rapids. The Middle Yough is for those with small children and for the extreme, there is an Upper Yough trip which only runs on days of water release from a dam above the Park. Several other features can be visited in the Park - natural waterslides, Cucumber Falls, as well as many miles of trails to be walked. The Park is also bisected by the bikeway of the Great Allegheny Passage on its way from Cumberland, Maryland to Pittsburgh. There are hostels, campgrounds and fast food outlets all centered at Ohiopyle, the Park center. If you are headed here on a summer weekend, advance reservations might be in order since the Park is wildly popular. Two Frank Lloyd Wright homes - Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob - can be found just outside the Park in opposite directions, while Fort Necessity and a large reservoir on the Youghiogheny are but a few miles away, too.
