Germany Off The Beaten Path: 479 reviews and 733 photos

The small town of Porta Westfalica near Bielefeld is best known for a historical monument of the first (modern) German Emperor Wilhelm I., standing on top of a small mountain, with a great view on the town and the surrounding region. When Wilhelm died in 1888, many cities in Germany hurried to dedicate monuments to honour the late Emperor to prove their patriotic feelings. The building started 1892 and was completed in 1896.
