Air Force Memorial, Washington D.C.: 3 reviews and 15 photos
The Air Force Memorial opened on October 14, 2006 and is located in Alexandria, VA, not far from the Pentagon and just off I-395 near Crystal City. The memorial features three arched steel towers designed to resemble the USAF Thunderbirds "bomb-burst formation" while also representing the Air Force core values of Integrity, Service, and Excellence.
On either side of the arches you will find two marble walls. One wall describes the Air Force core values and lists the major air campaigns since the creation of the Air Force. The other wall has a listing of all of the USAF's medal of honor winners and other founders and heroes including Charles Lindbergh, Lance Sijan, Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Frank Luke, and Hap Arnold. Also in front of the eastern wall is a statue of four AF honor guard personnel carrying the AF and US flags.
From the monument you have a view of nearby Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon, and the distant Washington Monument and the Capital Building.
The AF Memorial is open until 11pm in the summer and 9pm in the winter. Parking is across the street from the monument.
Address: One Air Force Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA, 22211
Directions: The easiest way to reach the memorial is actually to drive past it on I-395 then take exit 8A (Rt 27/Washignton Blvd) and turn Right on Columbia Pike. You could also walk about a half mile from the Pentagon metro station.
