Because we were staying in Hill City, we had two choices to reach Mount Rushmore, located only 7 miles away. We decided to continue south on Highway 385/16 out of the city for a short distance before turning east onto Highway 244 leading to the National Memorial. It was still only about 9 AM so the sun was was making for some great shadowy scenes as we wound our way through the Black Hills. The very sharp and narrow peaks combined with the beautifully tall and green trees covering the slopes made for some spectacular sights - and numerous cars were stopped here and there taking photos. However, because the road is narrow, fairly busy and without shoulders, it was a bit tricky to suddenly decide to pull-over for photos.

Our main priority was to see Mount Rushmore itself, so we decided to wait until we were finished with that before stopping to enjoy Highway 244 on our return trip. However, by then it was past 11 AM resulting in the high and bright sun washing out these attempts of ours to capture something of what we had seen earlier. In the 2nd photo, note the man standing on the large boulder at the right - he made the plunge into the lake just after I took the shot! I'd recommend leaving for Rushmore a bit earlier in the morning than we did so you have some time to enjoy the sights along the highway before you start the tour.

Directions: Highway 244, from Keystone to where it meets Highway 385/16 just south of Hill City
