The Whale museum at Húsavík is a very interesting museum on "everything you ever wanted to know about whales..." and is a must see when visiting Húsavík - "The Whale-watching town of Iceland". By all means visit the museum BEFORE going on a Whale watching tour. On the ground floor there are many rooms with so much information, like "Whale species in Icelandic Waters" "History of Whaling in Iceland" "Marine Ecosystems" "Whale biology" "Orcas" "Whale stranding" "Dolphins" "Whale watching" and The Bird cliff. On the upper level is the most interesting "Whale gallery" called the "Whale walk" where you walk in-between skeletons of different species of whales, and seeing the size of the skeletons up close is amazing. On that floor there is also a Lecture room.
The Whale museum is a non-profit organisation that forms the educational component to the whale watching trips in Húsavík. As the Whale Museum is performing research on the whales in Skjálfandi Bay, the bay outside Húsavík, they welcome any pictures you take of whales on the Whale-watching tours with information on location of the trip and the date.
The opening hours are June-August: 9-19h and May-September: 10-17h and the entrance fee is ISK 700 (2008) ISK 600 for groups.
