Watermellon is served with just about every meal in china and represents the end of a meal. When the watermelon is placed on the table you know that the meal is now over so if you are still hungry....order more food!
Fruit stalls are a very common sight in Shanghai and these stalls also sell the most magnificent peached and Lychees when they are in season.
Watermelons are only sold whole but you can often do a deal with another shopper and purchase half each! This is very common and Anne and I did exactly that in Shanghai. We split the cost with another customer and had the shopkeeper slice the melon for us.
Be warned, haggling is a way of life for these people. 6 peaches should cost you approx. 10 Yuan. A whole watermelon should coast approx. 15 Yuan.
