After entering the Forbidden City via the Meridian Gate you enter an impressive area that houses the Five Marble Bridges of the emperor.
These five bridges symbolize the five virtues of Confucianism and they are built across the Golden water, which flows from west to East.
When you cross these bridges, and everyone wants to cross the middle bridge as it was only for the emperor, you are looking at the Gate of Supreme harmony.

The whole effect was to replicate the jade belt that was worn by the officials!
