Champaign, and a lot of the midwest, has some land which is just incredible to bike along. It doesn't quite have the drama of the California coast, or the prestige of the Tour de France, but it does give you straight, relatively unoccupied roads stretching for miles and miles. You can basically pick any direction heading out of the Champaign-Urbana area; as you exit the town proper, you find acre after acre of corn and soybeans. The roads are one-lane and are predominantly laid out in a grid pattern, with intersections coming at ~1 mile intervals. The land is mostly flat, the roads are in pretty good condition, and the horizon's the limit.

You can ride alone, or check in with the Prairie Cycle Club, which has rides of various lengths and speeds nearly every weekend (while the weather is good). Check them out for more details on maps, conditions, and events.
