The Frauenkirche in Dresden is a symbol of the re-united state of Germany : the most famous church in Dresden had been bombed by the allied forces and almost completely destroyed like the rest of the old-town-centre of Dresden during the last few weeks of WW II.
The DDR, (the east-german government) left the church-ruins as they were, because they never had enough money to restore it and they also did not want to rebuild that church. When Germany East and West were re-united in 1989 it was one of the first projects to rebuilt this wonderful church, that was finally re-opened again in 2006. Most of the stones that were used to build the church are white, those are the newly made stones, while the black/dark stones in the facade will mark the few ones that are still the original stones at that very place.
be prepared of huge crowds of tourists every day,but to take a look inside makes sense anyway !
Directions: Frauenkirche is in the centre of Dresden, just about 50 meters from the river Elbe and 300 meters from Zwinger
