"Sans souci" is the french expression for " without trouble / sorrows" and so this name was choosen by King Friedrich the Great for his summerpalace in Potsdam, because he was trying to get a palace, far away from busy Berlin and far away from "his job" .
Friedrich the Great was rather a pilosopher, composer and flutist than a king or a strategist.
He wanted to build a palace , where he could meet friends, play the flute, discuss about philosphy and have a simple, peaceful life among his friends and visitors from all over Europe.
Friedrich the Great made the first sketches for his new castle himself in 1745 and the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsddorf built the castle according to these plans. The interior was built by Knobelsdorff and Johann August Nahl and is absolutely worth a visit !
The new Palais consists of 200 rooms and was built between 1763 and 1769 with a high dome. Inside the New Palais you may find the living quaters of the king and a small theatre.
In the New Palais you will find the main ticket-boxes, the souvenir-shop and the restrooms for the tourists.
The Communs are the elegant buildings opposite of the main castle, and they had been the living-quaters of the employees of the castle - in fact it was quite a unique idea by the king to grant them to live in such a beautiful, seperate castle. And of course these buildings needed also to match to the rest of the palace.
Today this part of the castle still needs some restorations, and it is used for the castle-administration, and NOT open to the public !

You can see the interior of the New Palais
