The East Pyongyang Grand Theatre was constructed from 1988 to 1989 and opened in May 1989. It covers 43,800 square metres (about 15 acres) and has a seating capacity of 3,500. It is a venue for chorale and art groups, such as the Mansudae Art Troupe, who gave a January 2007 concert commemorating the renovation of the theatre. It was the site of the 2008 concert by the New York Philharmonic. Touring orchestras and choral groups also give performances here.
