At one of the hidden corners of Kalemegdan fortress there is a 16th century fountain built by Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic (Sokollu Mehmed Pasha-in Turkish).
Mehmed was born into a Serb Orthodox family in or near Sokolovici in Bosnia. Mehmed's birth name was probably Bajica, while his father was named Dimitrije. He had two brothers and a sister, as well as at least one uncle. Details about his family and relations are disputed on two major counts. One is his relationship to Makarije Sokolovic. Traditionally identified as his brother, today some historians consider him to have been either a nephew or distant relative. Makarije Sokolovic was first Patriarch of the reestablished Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate of Pec. Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic was taken by Turks from his family as tribute, so-called 'blood tribute', and raised in the strict Islamic spirit. As one of the best of janissaries he stayed in royal service and took very high positions, playing an important role in the history of the Ottoman Empire.
