"Confusing Duplicated Place Names" France Warnings Or Dangers Tip by pedroswift

Elsewhere in my France generic pages I have encouraged readers to be aware of the names of Departments of France if only to help decode the multiple places all with the same name. (see "things to do" - 'visit Villages Chic').Some may have the Department name appended to differentiate from similar named places. eg: "Aix en Provence". More often than not "sur" (upon) - and the name of the river on which the town is located is added.eg. "Chalon-sur-Saone"
Try typing into ViaMichelin a place name like "Celles" and see how the mapping programme asks for more information because there are so many places of that name. Or type "Saint Hilaire" into the vt 'Destination' search engine (top right of the page) to see how many are in vt data base. OK! You are too lazy to do that! I can tell you there are 96 matching places...yikes.
I have suffered at the hands of the map makers a couple of times and have reacted only with a Gaelic shrug of the shoulders.
However, I was recently reduced to sobbing and treats of physical violence to the D**k Head who decided to perpetuate the name of a river running parallel to the River Loire less than an hours drive north of that mighty waterway. The river in question : the "Loir" (no 'e').
How dumb is that? It eventually joins the Loire at Angers via the rivers Sarthe&Maine.
"Anger"? how appropriate?
You will see examples in VT pages and other web sites of places along the "Loir" (no 'e') which posters "think" are Loire River locations.
As a matter of fact, I should have taken better note of the Department Name. The most northerly Department of the Centre Region is Eure et Loir named after this River Loir with out an "e" and the River Eure.
Ah well ! He who disregards his own advice gets his just desserts.
Navigators - get it right & save fuel and embarrassment!!!
Of course, users of the ultimate crutch, GPS, should ensure they are very precise in punching in their destination place name!!! One does hear the sad stories of drives into the wilderness miles away from the intended destination!!??
My mistake during trip planning was journalising and adding an "e" when I copied details of a Loir River restaurant I thought we might visit.
