Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental Province has a reputation as a University Town in the South. It is host to a number of schools and the larges Protestant University in the Country, the Silliman University. besides it, it has quite a number of attractions and scenic spots nearby and in the environs such as St Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral with the Adjacent Belfry is the Center of the Catholic Heritage of Dumaguete City. The Belfry also doubles as a Siege Tower in the 1700's due to rampant pirate attacks from Mindanao during those times. This is the City's Other Main Attraction (the other is Silliman University, the first Protestant University in the Philippines). The Belfry is also just across the public Market and the Rizal Park. St Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, is the seat of Archdiocese of Dumaguete. It is the Main Latin Rite Roman Catholic Church in Dumaguete City and was built in the early 1700's. It Doubled as a Garrison during those times due to rampant attacts of Pirates and Marauders from Mindanao. At Present, the area is always packed with locals and tourist since this is close to the Downtown Area.
