Herrenchiemsee is another castle of "mad" king Ludwig II of Bavaria and he had spent 16 millions of Goldmark, but the palace was never finished and so he could live there for only 9 days before he died (or rather was murdered).
King Ludwig II bought this island in 1873 and started to build his most expensive castle.
He tried to build a "New Versailles" and copied some parts of it's architecture and park.
The large hall of mirrors is the highlight of every castle-tour through Herrenchiemsee , and with a total length of 98 meters it is even a bit larger than the one in Versailles !
Georg Dollmann and Julius Hoffmann were the architects of the castle and Karl von Effner was responsible for the great architecture of the castle - gardens.
Building the castle needed 7 years ( 1878-1885)
The interior of the palace can be visited
in a guided tour ONLY !
Besides the great rooms inside the castle,
you may as well see The King-Ludwig II - museum
on the 1st floor of the castle.
That museum is open daily 09.00 a.m. - 05.00 p.m.
from may to september
NO Photography inside the palace !
Directions: Herrenchiemsee is on an island in Chiemsee. Go to Prien, take the ship and walk about 20 min to the palace !
