"Carthage - Byrsa Hill" Tunisia Things to Do Tip by Willettsworld

Tunisia Things to Do: 757 reviews and 1,154 photos

This hill was originally 70m (230ft) high before the Romans arrived and levelled the summit by 6m (20ft) in order to create a massive flat space that measures 336m by 323m. This space provided them the opportunity to build their capitol and forum, temples and a library. A model of what the buildings once looked like on Byrsa Hill resides in the museum which lies next to the Cathedral on the hill itself. Today, you can see the foundations of some of the buildings and temples plus a small, well-preserved section of a Punic residential quarter that was buried and filled with earth during the Romans levelling operations.
