"Steam Powered Train Experience" Taos Things to Do Tip by jfslenes

Taos Things to Do: 76 reviews and 152 photos

Take a ride on the Cumbres! Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR. Essentially a rolling operating museum of late 1800's steam powered narrow guage rail road era. Cumbres takes you over Cumbres Pass, over 10,000 feet high! Spectacular scenery hardly does this trip justice.

A couple suggetions. First, take the full day trip, not the partial trip. Both halves are quite different and both are worth the extra cost of the full deal. Second, take trip number 3. That is the trip that offers the train ride from Chama to Antonito. The steepest uphill grade is from Chama up to Cumbres Pass so the steam engine works the hardest (fun) on that segment.

We recommend staying in Taos, driving to Antonito early in the morning, Cumbres busses you to Chama in time to take the 10 AM departure from Chama, they feed you lunch at the mid point, Osher, and you continue to Antonito where you drive back to Taos for the evening.

Dress in layers!!! We are approaching fall and the 10,000 foot elevation will see cooler temps than you'll see in Taos at 7,000 feet. Before the train ceases seasonal operations, you'll likely see snow in the mountains. With the upcoming fall season, plan your trip in the last week of September or early October. That is usually (no guarantee of exact dates) when the colors are most specatacular.
