Look into the air to see the beauty of Altmarkt.

When we were in Dresden in August 2007 there was still a lot of building and restoration going on.

The big rectangular square has been the core of the city since its foundation, and first mentioned in 1370. It has been the centre of community life, not just for holding markets. It is Dresden's oldest square.

After the World War II it was restored from 1953. On the eastern and western side of the square they erected massive buildings which got a certain lightness by adding turrets, towers, dormer windows and bays, gabled rooves and other decorative elements. Now cleaned up it looks lovely.

On the northern side of the square is the so called Dresdner Kulturpalast where a lot of cultural events take place.

Altmarkt is the location of Dresden?s traditional Christmas Market, the so called Striezelmarkt, which is Germany's oldest Christmas Market. It was first mentioned in 1434. Striezel is a delicious Christmas cake that you can keep for quite a while ? if you have the temptation under control ;-)

Through a passage way in the arcades at Seestraße - through Webergasse - you reach Altmarkt-Galerie. This is a shopping mall with more than 100 shops and a lot of food and fruit stalls, cafés, etc. where you can a quick, cheap and delicious lunch.
