Hjálparfoss - Help's waterfall is a beautiful waterfall in Þjórsárdalur valley up-country in South-Iceland. It is split in two with a beautiful pond in front and surrounded by extraordinary basalt rock formations, one in the form of a bear's head right next to the left waterfall.
Hjálparfoss runs in the river Fossá right before it merges into Þjórsá river. The second highest waterfall in Iceland, Háifoss, cascades into a gorge in the same river further up-country from Hjálparfoss.
This is an ideal picnic area in beautiful surroundings. Hjálp "help" is the name given to this area as travellers crossing the barren Sprengisandur high-lands could graze their horses there after a long journey. As Mt. Hekla is very close to Hjálparfoss there is lava and ashes everywhere and the National power company Landsvirkjun has put a great deal of work into trying to turn the Þjórsárdalur valley green again. And they have done a wonderful job, the valley is wonderfully green with lots of trees - very beautiful and takes my breath away when I visit there.
On a sunny day you can see Icelanders swim by the waterfall :)
When returning back to road 32 drive just 1-2 km further ahead and make a right turn, there on the left hand side is the Saga-age farm "Þjóðveldisbærinn" and Búrfellsvirkjun hydropower-plant is straight ahead.
Address: Þjórsárdalur, South-Iceland
Directions: Take ring-road 1 to Selfoss S-Iceland, after 15 km make a left turn on road 30, a right turn on road 326 at Árnes which then turns into 32. Take a right turn at Hjálparfoss which is a couple of kilometers on gravel road.
