The French National Archives have been located since 1808 in the Marais district of Paris, in two buildings called the Hôtel de Soubise and the Hôtel de Rohan.

These were originally the private homes of French aristocrats, until they were requisitioned by the State on orders of the Emperor Napoleon in 1808.

The buildings contain lavishly decorated rooms from the 18th century, in addition to the Museum of the History of France and huge collections of official and unofficial documents from 1790 to the 1950s.
